Seasons Change, But God Doesn’t
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” - Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)
October has a way of putting change on display.
The landscape that was green just weeks ago suddenly comes alive with reds, oranges, yellows, and golds. Mornings become crisp. Daylight fades a little earlier. Leaves begin to loosen from branches that held them all summer. Everywhere we look, creation seems to announce the same message: A new season is here.
Of course, we don't need a calendar or changing leaves to tell us that life moves through seasons too.
Some seasons arrive with excitement…a new opportunity, a new relationship, a new beginning. Others come with endings we didn't choose. There are seasons filled with laughter and seasons marked by tears. There are times when the path ahead seems clear and times when we have absolutely no idea what God is doing.
Change is simply part of life.
Our families change. Friendships change. Careers change. Churches change. Our health and bodies change. Plans we were certain about can suddenly change. Even the world around us can seem completely different from one year to the next. And when enough things begin changing at once, we can start searching desperately for something solid to hold onto.
That's what makes Hebrews 13:8 such a powerful promise: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
In a world of constant change, Jesus remains unchanged.
And when we aren't sure about what lies ahead, it can be helpful to look behind us.
Scripture repeatedly calls God's people to remember. Remember His provision. Remember His deliverance. Remember the ways He remained faithful, even during the times when His people were anything but faithful to Him.
We need to remember too.
Think about the seasons you've already walked through. There have probably been times when you couldn't imagine how a situation could possibly work out. There were prayers you prayed without knowing what God's answer would be. There were circumstances you wondered whether you would ever get through.
And yet, here you are.
That doesn't mean every story ended the way you hoped. God's faithfulness doesn't guarantee a life without heartbreak, disappointment, loss, or unanswered questions.
It means that through every one of those seasons, God remained God.
The Jesus who was faithful then is the same Jesus who is faithful now.
When life is good and when life hurts. When we understand what God is doing and when we don't. When our faith feels strong and when we're barely hanging on.
Whatever season describes your life right now, Jesus is there.
If this is a season of joy, thank Him.
If you're walking through uncertainty, trust Him.
If you're grieving something you've lost, lean into Him.
If something new is beginning, follow Him.
And if you're simply exhausted, rest in Him.
Your circumstances may be changing, but His presence has not.
Perhaps the most difficult part of change, though, isn't what is happening today. It's wondering what might happen tomorrow. We like to know the plan. We want to see what's around the next corner. We feel more comfortable when life seems predictable.
Faith offers us something better than predictability.
Faith doesn't mean knowing exactly what tomorrow will bring. It means knowing who will already be there when tomorrow comes.
The Jesus who was faithful yesterday and walks beside you today will still be Jesus tomorrow.
His character will not change.
His grace will not expire.
His mercy will not run dry.
His promises will not suddenly become unreliable.
His love will not disappear.
His kingdom will not be shaken.
Our security, then, isn't found in creating a life where nothing changes. That's impossible. Our security is found in belonging to the One who remains faithful through every change.
Maybe that's one of the lessons October quietly teaches us.
A tree doesn't keep its leaves forever. What was beautiful in one season eventually gives way to something different. The leaves fall. Winter comes. And eventually, spring returns.
There may be something you need to release in this season too…an expectation, a disappointment, a plan that didn't happen, a season you loved but can't recreate, or perhaps the fear you've been carrying about whatever comes next.
We can release what was because we know the One who remains.
So this October, when you notice the leaves changing around you, allow them to remind you of this truth: Seasons change. Circumstances change. Life changes. But God doesn't.
Whatever season you're leaving behind and whatever season lies ahead, you don't walk into it alone.
The God who has been faithful before will be faithful still. Yesterday. Today. Forever.
